Portuguese Bend Landslide Myths
:
- It is a landslide – Yes but now it really
is a land creep - manageable land movement occurring constantly, it
was first identified as a fast moving active slide but its behavior
due to its depth is not the same as the disasters you see on TV.
- The water from the homes
built on the slide caused the slide. – No the water that gets in from the top of
the slide, our surface water does not increase the slide,
this is an ancient slide it has never started or stopped. The building of the Crenshaw to go
through may have improved the access for water to enter the top of the
slip plane where it does the most damage. But that has not been proven either.
- The Land slips in one
direction, down the hill - No we have both lateral and horizontal land
movement. In one lot you may have a pull or a fissure open and new
land seems to appear as the lot drops down from the other half of the
lot and a new cliff does appear. These fissures are in many different
directions. North to South and East to West. Our movement can pull a peppertree
in half while it is still growing, and we have many split trees in the
community.
- Homes are slipping in to
the sea
- well yes but really very slowly and not in our lifetime several
over.
- The area is blighted - The homes have been put
on steel and prices are up due to the rural environment, the city has
not embraced our unique living style and do not approve of our action.
They insist on no permits and are suspicious of us and we are
suspicious of them, because we must repair our difficult living
conditions often. It would be
nice to have a more helpful city relationship where we where embraced
for our unique solutions and not slandered.
- The landslide is dangerous - no injury can be
attributed to the landslide or containers, the property does not slide
over another property the properties are marching in place like
soldiers with the center of the slide moving faster than the
edges. This causes some
fissures to appear but they are harmless.
- The experts can stop the
slip
- No they cannot, but they like to keep working for people who pay
them to stop it. The wells that could have been placed where never
fully placed in actions the ones that are in support now do little to
mitigate our movement. Dig it
all out and I will have a fine harbor, just leave my home and provided
a dock!
- The landslide area is
haunted -
Yes it is - stay out!
- Mrs. Vanderlip
killed her Husband – No way get a life, the Vanderlips have a large family some are kinda
kooky, but not killers, they
are family folk and religious, so nothing but happy-happy here, no
ghost dogs either– although packs of dropped of discarded strays have
gone feral from time to time and attacked horses and people.
- You cannot build in the
landslide - Yes there is a moratorium on new building at this time
- The houses
are not on their own property – lot surveys describe but do not defined the
lot lines. Our lots have been moving
with their markers not over each other. The Cullen Act and many other
laws to say that our physical markers determine our lot lines not GPS
markers. We own the REAL-estate
not GPS-Estate. This has been
so for 50 years and many laws support that lot markers are the true
indication of land, all of California is moving on the
continental shelf so most lots are not on original survey lines
either.
- No
Foundation! That is not safe – Concrete foundations are not safe here or
really any where earthquakes pull the land, our containers will ride
the land and not get split by the land. No load is passed into our
structure. The pyramids did not have foundations they still
stand.
- Containers
are ugly and unsafe – Containers are used all over for storage and are
stronger than most structures.
They can be made to integrate into the structure and inside you
barely notice them.
- Containers
are too tempting for people to live in: So are garages and RV’s
your point is?
